How to Repair Pool Steps

While swimming pools are built to be relatively durable, extensive wear from use or weather can cause cracks to appear especially in areas like the steps that are consistently used. Repairing a crack in your pool steps isn’t too complicated. With a few supplies and some elbow grease, you can get your steps repaired quickly and get back to enjoying all your pool has to offer.

Materials Needed to Repair Pool Steps

You won’t need too much to repair your pool steps and oftentimes, most materials will come with whatever kind of kit that you purchase. For example, you can buy a fiberglass, vinyl, or concrete repair kit depending on the type of pool you own. These kits will include the general materials needed to get the job done.

In addition to what’s in the kit, you will also want to grab some sandpaper, a rotary stone bit, some epoxy paint, brushes, and a towel.

Repairing Pool Steps

The first step is creating a dry space to work with. This means draining the pool just enough so that you can access the area of the step that needs fixing. Do not drain the entire pool especially without the help of a professional as this can cause further damage to the pool. Once the water is removed, you can clean and dry the area. Make sure it is completely free of any debris or chlorine particles and that you have a clean surface to work on.

Next, you’ll want to address the actual crack in the pool steps. Start by locating exactly where the crack is and make sure to mark it so you have a clear idea moving forward. Take time to thoroughly dry off the area around the crack as well whether with the towel or a hair dryer if one is handy. Scrape off any debris before you get started on any grinding or sanding.

Once the area is cleared out, you can begin grinding out the area with the rotary stone bit. This will be the first part of your process to smooth out the surface. Next, take your sandpaper and sand down the same spot where the crack is located. We recommend using 100-grit sandpaper. Once the area is smooth, clean up any dust or debris leftover.

Finally, you’re able to apply your repair kit. These will come with specific instructions to follow in order to ensure the repair is done correctly. Once you’ve finished and given the area time to dry and cure, sand it down and repaint or recoat the space with epoxy paint.
